I am always on the lookout for movies with a substantial plot and an interesting build-up of story. Of course the cinematography, casting, and all the other factors in a film would be a plus if it made the movie more appealing to watch. However, how the movie is able to portray its message to its audience would be the most important element to take note of. With that, I will be featuring a new segment here in my blog that would relate on its theme, that is, about the environment. For my first “Movie Pick of the Day”, I will be writing about Avatar.
Avatar, directed by James Cameron, was shown in 2009. The main setting of the movie is in Pandora, an entirely different world inhabited by indigenous humanoid species called the Na’vi. A group of people from Earth have travelled all the way to Pandora to mine for a very rare ore called “unobtainium”. To safely explore the planet and convince the Na’vi to leave their Hometree, they created avatars wherein a real human would be able to connect to it virtually. The story went on when the human protagonist (Jake Sully) turned his back against his military mission and fought for the Na’vi to save their home.
We do not live in Pandora but the situation portrayed in the film is not anymore new to us. We experience the same scenario in our own planet. Environmental issues like illegal logging resulting to landslides, animal extinction due to the destruction of their habitat, global warming that causes climate change, and many other issues are evident today. We are powerful enough to create a change in our world. It is just a matter of our choice if we would want a better world for everyone and for the future generations to come or if we would instill our emphasis on our own greed and personal interests.
I could definitely say that Avatar is an inspiring environmentalist film. It gives a message to all of us that we have to value what our world has provided for us. The Earth has so much to give and in return, we have to take responsibility in taking care of our planet.
If you have not watched the movie yet, here’s the trailer of Avatar to give you a preview of its story:
